SWUmba for all
Sweaty y Feliz after our class!
In an effort to bring more joyful movement to The Movement, SWU has begun to create space in our programming for group dance classes. This programming is made possible by funding from Alice Kleberg Reynolds foundation and the enthusiasm from our staff member, Gio. SWUmba, a free Zumba class for community members will be available throughout the Spring.
We have had 3 fun weeks of zumba mornings at The PourBox (433 S Hackberry St), a local Eastside coffee shop. Attendees enjoyed some cafecito and moved their bodies to the energetic music. Community member, Karin, skillshared her knowledge of Saya Caporal, an Afro-Bolivian dance form composed of consistent hip motions, along with rapid footwork. Saya Caporal, not only raises the heart rate through cardio movements, but also strengthens the core through controlled hip and core isolations. We have one more installment of SWUmba left on April 23rd at 8:30am.
Starting on April 29th the classes will be moved to Wednesday nights at the International Folk and Culture Center at Our Lady of the Lake University. Classes will be at 5pm, and continue through May. SWUmba classes have offered the opportunity to connect with community members on a different level. Creating space in your life for dance and joyful movement can be a healing experience both physically as well as mentally.
Come out for your opportunity to move with the community! All levels and abilities are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothes to move in and bring a water bottle. Nos vemos pronto!
