SWu at the 2026 International Women’s Day March
This year SWU joined with a coalitions of other organizations led by Mujeres Marcharán to plan this year’s International Working Women’s Day march. This year’s theme was titled “Fury is Fuerza: Love is Our Sword. Truth Is Our Compass” and was modeled after Black Panther member Assata Shakur. Imagery included machetes, fire, and corazons.
Our efforts included hosting an art build at SWU’s offices where participants could paint their own cardboard machetes with protest slogans along with helping paint a giant banner for the march.
SWU also planned and hosted a launch party, called “Drag Out I.C.E”, the Friday before the march at Chiflada’s in coordination with Los MENtirosos Drag Kings. Several other drag performers joined in as well to perform for a packed house. Attendees helped to fundraise $200 for the Hands Off Cuba delegation heading to Cuba to deliver medical aid, non perishable foods, and other much needed items. You can read more about this specific event on our blog!
At the march on Sunday March 8th, SWU staff and a Círculo de Abuela member tabled and sold SWU merch, handmade art made by the círculo, DIY emboridery kits, zines, stickers and more. We also gave out information on upcoming events and talked with attendees about the importance of getting involved. Our Executive Director, Diana, held an important role as one of the peacekeepers at the march as well. Although it was a rainy, cloudy day, everyone still came together to listen to live music, learn more about community organizations doing feminist work, and take to the streets of San Anto to take up space as feminists, allies, working women, militants, and those who want to continue the fight for women’s liberation.
