Promotora Training with Cultivando, Fuerza Unida, and Eco Centro

Last week SWU staff, volunteers, and members attended promotora trainings, along side Fuerza Unida staff, volunteers, and members, facilitated by Cultivando and hosted at Eco Centro.

The promotora style of organizing and outreach is a feminist, grassroots, and community led model formalized in Mexico that has spread all over the Americas. Originally promotoras were women in the community who were trained to be able to educate their neighbors and community about various health issues-including how to access health care resources. These women were identified as leaders in their communities and were able to use the trust and respect they had built to get information to those in need-especially in rural, marginalized, and otherwise “hard to reach” areas and communities. Now promotoras can be found in neighborhoods all across Latin America and the US and educate their communities on many different topics.

SWU, Fuerza Unida, and Cultivando all have long histories using the promotora model and it was great for our organizations to share space, stories, and strategies.

If you’re interested in learning more about promotoras or becoming one yourself, send us a message at info@swunion.org! Anyone can be a promotora and its a very important community role.
